Richard Byng works in Plymouth as a general practitioner at Adelaide Street Surgery and was a GPwSI in mental health in Icebreak until 2025. He is Professor in Primary Care Research at the University of Plymouth specialising in developing and evaluating care for individuals with mental health problems and complex health and social needs. His work spans policy through to primary care consultations, increasingly examining whole systems approaches. He has developed community based initiatives including the Rushey Green Time Bank and collaborative care for prison leavers, and individuals with dementia and psychosis. He leads the University of Plymouth Community and Primary Care Research.
