Dr Paula Wright is a GP and appraiser based in the North East, with a long-standing commitment to supporting colleagues and helping GPs to thrive in their careers. She has extensive experience in education, appraisal, and workforce development, and is particularly passionate about retaining GPs within the profession and enabling them to explore diverse portfolio careers.
Paula has written extensively on the evolving GP workforce, including authoring a toolkit on roles beyond traditional practice and publishing the 2024 British Journal of General Practice opinion piece “When is a GP not a GP? The ‘othering’ of new GP roles.” She has supported GP education and appraisal since 2003, delivering protected learning events in Newcastle and contributing to appraisal training, appraiser development, and resource creation for over 15 years.
She previously led the North East GP retention scheme for eight years and chaired the North East Sessional GP Group from 2008–2015. Alongside this, she has researched and published on GP self-directed learning groups and the feasibility of revalidation processes for sessional GPs. Paula also runs a YouTube channel offering advice on GP careers and appraisal.
She passionate about clinical practice, personal development, and committed to supporting GPs to flourish across the breadth of modern general practice.
