Dr Tom Black is a highly experienced GP with more than three decades in clinical practice. A graduate of University College Dublin, he has spent over 30 years as a partner at Abbey Medical Practice, alongside a longstanding commitment to medical education and GP training.

Throughout his career, Tom has held influential leadership roles across the medical profession. He served as Western LMC Secretary for 17 years, chaired the BMA’s GP Committee for seven years and, most recently, completed a six-year term as Chair of BMA Council Northern Ireland in 2024. He has also worked as a UK negotiator on the GP Quality and Outcomes Framework.

A longstanding advocate for innovation in healthcare delivery, Tom was a founding member of Ireland’s first GP out-of-hours service and has helped develop new models of primary care. He currently works across NHS and private general practice, bringing a broad perspective to discussions about the future of healthcare in Northern Ireland.
