Dr Jo Howe is a Chartered Psychologist and expert in mental and physical health integration, with nearly a decade of experience in realist research, service delivery and more recently, psychopharmacology. She currently leads the delivery a programme of work focused on addressing weight gain associated with antipsychotic medications, which if left untreated can contribute to the development of Type II Diabetes, cardiovascular disease and dyslipidaemia. Dr Jo Howe is the lead researcher of the NIHR-funded RESOLVE study, which has researched how people living with serious mental illness (SMI) can manage antipsychotic-induced weight gain. She is also leading the development of a preventative antipsychotic weight management pathway, funded by Aston University, working closely with NHS Trusts and service users to co-produce training, monitoring tools, and practical guidance for implementation in real-world settings. In addition to her academic research, she is Director of The Realist Hub, where she provides training and consultancy on realist methods. Her work is grounded in improving patient outcomes through early intervention, person-centred care, and bridging the gap between physical and mental health services. Passionate about tackling health inequalities, she collaborates with national and international partners to influence policy and drive systemic change in the care of people prescribed antipsychotics.
