Alan has had an interest in IV therapy and related safety issues since undergraduate studies, and past experience has included a period in industry running a compounding unit. In recent years he has focussed on IV fluids and IV stewardship, including publications on implementation of the NICE Fluids guideline, and on consensus recommendations for setting up stewardship systems, and now works with the International Fluid Academy and with Turning the Tide, a UK group committed to improving the use of IV fluids. He has been keen to try novel ways of administering drugs and new formulations, and believes that it is important to consider safety over the cost of those new formulations. Accredited at consultant level in Critical Care, Alan has provided leadership in critical care pharmacy, including pushing the development of accreditation in the specialty.
